A Tale of Two Bespoke Cicadas
Two 22-liter packs on one chassis turn design opinion into something you can actually measure.

Owning two versions of the same pack is not a flex. It is an accident that happens to be methodologically useful.
The ULA Equipment Bespoke Cicada 0426 and the Bespoke Series Cicada 0826, the latter a collaboration with Kenn Walker Designs, share a chassis closely enough to hold the large variables still.[^1][^2] Both are 22-liter packs with 20-liter main bodies, 18 × 11 × 5-inch exteriors, 15.5 × 10-inch laptop cavities, and 25-pound recommended load limits.[^1][^2] The 0426 arrived in April 2026 and took over daily work carry. The 0826 followed on the same chassis with a travel-leaning build.
Because the envelope is fixed, every remaining difference is a decision rather than a consequence. That is rare. Comparing two packs from different makers mostly measures the gap between two companies’ idea of a liter. Comparing these two measures what a designer chose to do with an identical box.
The liters are in different places
Both packs state 22 liters total and 20 liters in the main body.[^1][^2] The interesting number is not the total. It is the address.
The 0426 assigns 2 liters to its front panel: one 1-liter pocket and two 0.5-liter pockets. The 0826 assigns 3 liters: a 1-liter left pocket, a 1-liter right pocket with mesh organization, and a 1-liter top quick-access pocket with a three-section organizer.[^1][^2]
One extra liter of named front-pocket volume inside the same external rectangle does not create a 23-liter bag. Published volume methods are not precise enough to support that arithmetic, and pocket cavities compete with the main compartment as they fill. A charger in a front pocket borrows depth from the body behind it. Nominal capacity and simultaneous capacity are not the same measurement.
The practical version of this is a question product pages almost never answer: which spaces can you use at the same time? A 1-liter top pocket is physically real and awkward to fill when the main compartment is packed hard beneath it.
Shell-level sorting versus interior-level sorting
The 0426 makes the shell opinionated. One medium pocket, two small ones. Before a pouch enters the conversation, the panel has already sorted the load by size. It also carries bottle pockets both outside and inside, which is redundancy with a real cost in wall space, bought in exchange for a daily choice between access and discretion.[^1]
The 0826 moves the opinion inward. Its front reads as three broad doors, left, right, and top, with the finer sorting happening behind them.[^2] A large cavity with mesh tolerates a changing kit better, because it stays useful after a specific object leaves the routine. A 0.5-liter pocket sized perfectly for today’s charger becomes stranded capacity when the charger changes shape.
Neither approach wins in general. A stable kit rewards fixed geometry, because every item gains a home and packing becomes mechanical. A changing kit rewards looser cavities. The question is whether you want the shell to remember your load or to reassign the interior each morning.
Where the published fit advice contradicts itself
Both packs list a laptop cavity of 15.5 × 10 inches, and their published fit language does not match. The 0426 is described as taking most 13-inch machines and some 14-inch ones, naming the 14-inch MacBook Air. The 0826 is described as fitting up to 13 inches, explicitly ruling out the 14-inch MacBook Pro and the 15-inch Air.[^1][^2]
Same stated cavity, opposite advice. The contradiction resolves once fit is separated into three things: the cavity where the computer rests, the opening it must pass through, and the path required to get there. The 0426 reaches its laptop area from the top through the main opening. The 0826 adds a dedicated horizontal exterior zipper.[^1][^2] A horizontal opening is more convenient once the bag is packed, but it imposes a stricter insertion path, because a rigid corner must clear the zipper ends, the padding, and the seam allowances.
Owner observation, sample size one: a 14-inch machine loads into the 0826 without difficulty. That suggests the published limit is describing conservatism about a side-loading aperture rather than a smaller cavity, which the spec table already told us was the same size. Treat it as one laptop in one bag, but note the direction of the error. The cautious sentence understated the space.
The transferable rule is to trust measured rectangles first, access geometry second, and screen-diagonal class last. A “14-inch” laptop describes a display, not a chassis; bezels, hinges, feet, and cases all change the actual rectangle.
The materials disagree with their own reputations
The 0426 uses Challenge Outdoor EPX400 for the shell and EPX200 for the full liner. The 0826 uses Dimension-Polyant X-Pac X11 for the shell and Challenge Outdoor Ultra 200X for the liner, plus full-grain leather top and bottom panels.[^1][^2]
Published and compiled figures put EPX400 around 3,000 Taber abrasion cycles, EPX200 around 500, and Ultra 200X around 4,400, while commonly quoted X-Pac numbers sit lower and scatter widely by SKU.[^3][^4][^5] Read carelessly, that ranks the recycled EcoPak shell above the X-Pac construction usually described as the technical choice.
Read carefully, it does something more useful: it breaks the habit of treating a trademark as a performance tier. Taber results depend on wheel, load, endpoint, and conditioning, so numbers from different datasheets do not rank each other. Abrasion also says nothing about stitch holding, tear propagation, fold fatigue, or bond integrity. What survives is narrower and more durable. Recycled content does not imply weak abrasion. UHMWPE content does not imply one behavior. A liner faces real abrasion from chargers and laptop corners even though it never touches pavement.
The deeper cut on both laminate families is Vol. I; the adhesive and bond-line failure story is Vol. III, Chapter 7. The field-report version is that the highest number in the stack does not become the life expectancy of the bag.
One of them will need maintenance
The 0826’s full-grain leather panels are the only part of either pack that can improve with use. Full grain keeps the outer grain layer instead of sanding it away, so handling oils move into the structure, color deepens, and high-contact zones burnish.[^7]
That is a real property and not an exemption. Leather dries, cracks, stains, molds, and abrades. Patina is the desirable subset of change that happens when use stays inside the material’s tolerances, which means it is a care schedule, not a feature. Source material suggests conditioning every three to six months as a starting cadence, adjusted for climate and finish rather than followed as a rule.[^7]
It also costs weight. Leather runs roughly 700 to 900 g/m² at 1 mm against roughly 205 g/m² for VX21, and the whole-pack numbers show the tax at object scale: the 0426 is listed at 30.7 oz (870 g), the 0826 at 36.2 oz (1,026 g).[^1][^2][^7] Leather is not the only difference between those figures, but a pack that adds full-grain panels does not stay in the same weight class.
If zero-maintenance consistency is the goal, the 0426’s all-synthetic system is the more coherent object.
Subtraction and addition
Set the materials aside and the two packs disagree about what a week looks like.
The 0426 is subtractive. Its pass-through and passport pocket were deliberately omitted.[^1] It keeps optionality elsewhere: bottle pockets inside and out, a hipbelt option, strap choices. It reads as a coherent tool that can move between everyday and light-trail use without fully committing to either.
The 0826 is additive. Luggage pass-through, hidden passport pocket, AirTag holder, key lanyard, hanging loops, hook-and-loop fields, shoulder-strap daisy chains, side carabiner loops, dedicated exterior laptop access.[^2] Bottle pockets are exterior only. Hipbelt loops are omitted so they cannot obstruct the laptop zipper. It commits to commute and travel, then hands the owner attachment surfaces.
An omitted feature can be an editorial decision rather than a missing upgrade. Every pass-through adds seams, layers, assembly, and snag points, and encodes an assumption about use. The 0426 asks what can leave. The 0826 asks what a traveler might need.
There is one more difference worth naming, because the word “bespoke” is doing double duty. The 0426 offered buyer-facing choices: strap shape, an optional logo patch, a removable hipbelt, a magnetic sternum upgrade. The 0826 presents Kenn Walker Designs’ build more completely, collaboration patch included.[^1][^2] Both are bespoke. The agency sits in different places. One bespoke is yours; the other is someone else’s, and you are buying the taste rather than exercising your own.
They agree on one thing, which is evidence rather than coincidence: restrained exteriors, high-visibility interiors. Pink Flamingo EPX200 in the 0426, Electric Blue Ultra 200X in the 0826.[^1][^2] The surface seen forty times a day gets the color. When two opposite philosophies keep the same feature, that feature is probably chassis logic rather than decoration.
What repair looks like
Neither pack is a candidate for “buy it for life,” and that is not a criticism. Flexible goods do not support the promise. Zippers cycle, foam compresses, thread rubs, laminate interfaces flex, leather responds to storage. The workable standard is repairable for life: failure is expected, caught early, and routed to someone who can fix it.
ULA describes a lifetime warranty for defects in materials and workmanship for the original owner, with exclusions including improper use, accidents, general wear and tear, and third-party modifications.[^8][^9] Those exclusions matter, because the failures most likely after years of normal use are wear, not defects. The stronger signal is the repair program: ULA asks owners to make contact with photographs, offers paid tune-up work for non-warranty damage, and advises against discarding repairable packs.[^6][^10]
Closed editions complicate this. A maker may repair a panel or substitute a current material without being able to reproduce the exact colorway or collaborator detail. If visual originality matters more than function, the repair choices narrow.
The finding
Holding the chassis still is what made any of this legible. The verdict is not that one pack is better. It is that a 22-liter number, a fabric trademark, and a laptop rating each turned out to be less informative than the geometry underneath them, and that the two packs answer different questions about the same week.
